Technical specification of the RHEL Tomcat 100 racer.

Here you will find a mixture of technical data, hearsay and wishful thinking, particularly in the 'Performance' section at the bottom.

What type
What I have done to it / lame excuses.
Engine Good old Rover V8, Range rover 3.5 liter on 4CU injection. Changed the oil! Engine is basically bogo standard so I can compete in class 7. It has a remote filter pump base (Mocal) and an oil cooler. The alternator is on the right hand side on a P6 mounting bracket.
Air intake Snorkel with filter on top The air flow meter is angled rearwards and fitted to a snorkel made from an Impreza WRX intake that happened to be lying around. On top is a RaceX filter which is adequate and cheep!
Exhaust Vogue manifolds and system Only uses the first silencer, which is all it needs and is one of the quietest on the track. After the silencer I put in a flexi and a step up over the rear axle then it exits straight out the back.
Fuel system ATL fuel cell, Facet lift pump, swirl pot and Bosch high pressure pump. Braided hoses. The Fuel cell is in a custom made box, this feeds the Facet low pressure pump at the back (mounted in a biscuit tin) which in turn feeds the swirl pot at the front. This then feeds the Bosch high pressure pump. All hoses are Aeroquip steel braided.
Ignition Vogue, lucas electronic Jolly good system that, only mods left to do are to stop water getting into the dizzy breathers.
Transmission Vogue, ZF 4HP22 auto and standard transfer box. Bogo. Gearbox oil cooler is a 13 row Mocal jobby fixed with Moquip push on hose! The cooler is mounted just in front of the cooling fans, behind the cab.
Axles Fine spline Discovery. Rear is modified to have front style suspension (radius arms and panhard rod).
Brakes Disco discs and Vogue trans brake. Braided hoses.
Cooling Vogue radiator and twin Kenlowe fans. The radiator is mounted behind the cab, out of the way of at least some of the mud! The fans are connected in series (low speed) or parallel (high speed)
Chassis Discovery with tomcat space frame Full Tomcat 100 frame jobby. I have put in extra cross bracing and diagonal members because otherwise the only triangulation is in the roof! Loads of bracket added. Engine mounts fitted further back with extra bracing. Surplus chassis trimmed off.
Body Tomcat 100, in a fetching shade of green. Every panel has to be modified to fit the application.
Interior Tomcat sheet ally. Tomcat race seats. TRS six point harnesses. 2.5kg Fire extinguisher. Vogue Dash binnacle. Quick release steering wheel. Every panel has to be modified to fit the application.
Electrical FIA cut off switch with dump resistor. RHEL loom and switches. Most switches are mounted in a roof pod so either driver or navigator can operate them. Indicator stalk retained on steering column.
Wheels and tyres. Vogue wheels and Technic Amazon tyres. The standard Vogue alloys seem very strong and relatively light. The Amazons perform well on most surfaces, not too bad on road and are very tough. At the first race I ran for over a mile flat out with on tyre off the rim, the tyre was inspected and had no damage!
Suspension Tomcat springs. Fox dampers. This gives about 12 inches travel and works surprisingly well. Dampers require new mounting points on the chassis and axles.
Equipment Sparco intercom. 12 tonne tow rope. SOS/ OK cards. First aid kit. Fire extinguisher. Emergency tool kit. Squeegee. And yes, the tool kit does include Gaffa tape and a hammer.
