I have written about the end of the piston engine in the motor car due to
advancing electric drive technology. But as ever with any technological
revolution it will take time, and there will always be a place for piston
engines in niche products and of course classic cars. So what can they run
on when oil products become prohibitively expensive? Bio fuels have had a bad press, there are some splendid technologies that use 'phase two' bio mass, that uses the bits of plants that we don't eat, the bits left over, the bits farmers used to burn off etc. So bio fuel wont take food out of the system, which is nice. But there is another technology on the horizon, using algae to convert CO2 and water into fats that can in turn be brewed into biofuel. Compared to using corn this can be 1000 times more effective, using less land and less energy, in fact per hectare corn can produce about 30 litres of oil compared to 30000 litres from algae, brilliant. And of course the fact that it uses CO2 means that the whole process is carbon neutral. This gives long term hope for all us classic car enthusiasts. The future seems bright, in fact its bright green, and slightly slimey. |
