Range Rover dash goes digital
Visteon is producing the first digital screen to be used instead of the traditional dash gauges, in the new Range Rover.
Of course digi dashes have been tried before, but usually using dedicated display elements, this is the first mass production use of an ordinary computer screen.
Its been long overdue, but the idea means that they can run ‘virtual instruments’ and have any set up they want, whether it’s a big speedo and very little else for the average driver, or a big rev counter and loads of pointless gauges for the sportier driver, the system can be programmed to give what ever style the designers want.
This also means that the same unit can be used in different models, just with different programming.
It also brings up some possibilities for our ‘project’ cars, using old laptops. Running a suitable programme and using some suitable circuitry, maybe the PicoScope or a similar product could be used to make a digi dash for pocket money. Then simply drag and drop gauges where ever you want them, simples!
The only slight drawback is that you cant see them if the sun shines!
The Visteon system uses a high contrast TFT display, set deep into the dash so they are clear in all lighting conditions, cunning.
An then its only a matter of time before people start ‘chipping’ the dash, maybe for colour coded dial faces, or gauges in the shape of your favourite pet!
