8/5/06 Croft and some lessons in fluid levels.
Well, we made it to Croft, but only just! Lots of very exciting technical challenges occurred and there are still lots of mods to do but we started out at about 3 on the Saturday morning on the 4 hour drive to the circuit, full of hope, and of course coffee. The circuit is absolutely splendid, although quite flat, and suits the car very well, some long sweeping curves, some marvelous twisty bits and a hair pin which always resulted in a tail out exit. There was a full program of racing and we got a chance to watch some rather splendid battles in the saloons race with an old MKI was thrashing XJ40 and later machinery, absolutely splendid! |

We had two races and i actually managed to overtake someone in the first race, admittedly he later retired with mechanical problems, but its the principal that counts! Finished 10th out of 14 starters. Second race I picked up the pace a bit and was lapping 4 seconds faster! But ran into massive oil surge problems which saw the pressure drop to zero mid corner! I tried taking it a bit more easy but to no avail, then I hit fuel starvation problems (seem to need more than 20 liters in the tank to avoid surge) and had to retire. |

| All in all it was a brilliant day, i started feeling more comfortable with the car and my best time was half a second faster than the 2nd in class chap so there is hope. The 0-60 time is below 7s but i hardly use 3rd gear so I feel a lower ratio diff may be in order. The brakes are excellent but the rears do get really very hot, when i come in after a cool down lap there is smoke billowing out of the boot (i vent the inboard brakes into the boot and out under the rear bumper) and arches accompanied by the sound of a vigorous fry up, wont be long before the diff seals and caliper piston seals are cooked so there is some work to do there. | |
As you can see in the pictures, the car rolls far too much so i am going to fit later model springs all round, drop the front an inch or so and bias the brakes a bit and about a million other things! Hope to be out for Donning ton., tally ho! |
